Should a vegan business put the word 'vegan' in their name?

It's a difficult decision for any new businesses. Do you make your ethics obvious at the risk of alienating some customers?

“Should vegan businesses put the word ‘vegan’ in their name?  Welcome back to my Wednesday thoughts!

I’ve thought about this a lot over the ten plus years of running my business, especially since I called mine Clemie’s Vegan Cakes!

At the time, I didn’t overthink it.  Clemie’s and cakes sounded cute and everything I make is vegan, so it just made sense right?

But over the years, I’ve wondered, would my business have grown faster if I’d left that word out?  Although I had a lot of non vegan repeat customers when I used to trade at local farmers markets, I’d sometimes overhear people saying “oh, those aren’t for us” or “those are just for vegans.”  Which doesn’t make sense does it, because anyone can eat plant-based cake.

But at the same time, I do love that it’s obvious.  As a vegan, I’m so used to double checking menus and ingredients, it’s nice when you just know you’re safe.

So anyway, Clemie’s Vegan Cakes is here to stay.  My recipes are always, and always will be, completely vegan, but that doesn’t mean that they are just for vegans.  Anyone can enjoy plant based food!  What do you think?  Does the word ‘vegan’ help or hurt a business?”
