“Have you ever heard people say that they’d love to go plant based but vegan food is too expensive? Welcome back to my Wednesday thoughts!
Is it expensive to bake vegan cakes? This is something I’ve heard a lot recently, so I decided to do a little bit of research!
Now I’m only looking at this in terms of baking. Maths is not my strong point and I was getting stressed just figuring out the price of cake ingredients, so I’ll let someone else compare savoury food options!
Anyway I’ll put my workings at the bottom, but I used the Sainsbury’s website to find the price of all the ingredients you’d need to make a dozen dairy and egg cupcakes and a dozen vegan cupcakes.
Now I think that some people forget that the vast majority of ingredients used in baking are the exact same whether you’re making plant based cakes or not. Both recipes use, flour, sugar, vanilla, baking powder and icing sugar, there are really only a couple of differences.
Dairy alternatives do tend to be more expensive than dairy milk and butter, but that’s partly due to government farming subsidies which keep dairy products at a lower price than they actually should be. But even with the slightly more expensive dairy free butter and plant based milk, the vegan cupcakes came out cheaper. Does that surprise you?”
Cost of ingredients to make a dozen non vegan cupcakes (recipe from bbc good food)
Flour, baking powder, sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla extract, icing sugar = £3.98
Cost of ingredients to make a dozen vegan cupcakes (my recipe!)
Flour, baking powder, sugar, vanilla extract, oil, cider vinegar, plant milk, icing sugar, dairy free butter = £3.14
